About TM
Born in Hyderabad, India, his encounters with classical music began with his father, a renowned violinist, and pianist. However, his formal entry into the world of music was unexpected and took off with unprecedented momentum. Within a year of his first notes at the piano, he gave his debut, playing Mozart and Chopin concerti with members of the Nizam’s Symphony Orchestra.
Following early success in India he decided to embark on studies, residing in the US and in Europe to work with some of the eminent musicians and illustrious minds of our time. He is to date the only Indian to have been a resident at the prestigious International Piano Foundation, Lake Como, Italy. His teachers have included, Leon Fleisher, Fou Ts’ong, and Andreas Staier. Marthand has performed all over the world, including Florence, Brussels, New York, Berlin, and Paris. He possesses in his playing the uncommon ability to imbue ideas from diverse fields - ranging from sculpture and painting to literature and philosophy - emphasizing deep reflection and communicative insight to attain authentic expression.
Drawing from numerous personal relationships with legendary artists he is constantly seeking to push the expressive boundaries further. In a recent collaboration, he worked with Bice Horszowki on the late works of Chopin.
The upcoming concert series includes programs with Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations and the late works of Chopin and Beethoven. His performances intend not only to make classical music appreciated but also accessible and exciting to a new generation of listeners. Apart from music Marthand is passionate about education and is often invited to give talks on creativity and learning. His project SOTA is a multifaceted music-education movement designed to bring the highest caliber musicians from all across the globe to perform in India.
